Why travellers stopped buying SIM cards

Nothing to collect

Your QR code arrives by email the moment you pay. No airport counter, no queue, no tiny plastic tray.

Keep your own number

Your normal SIM stays in the phone. Calls and messages still reach you while the eSIM carries the data.

Set it up before you fly

Install at home on wifi and switch it on when you land. Arriving is not the moment to debug a connection.

Pay once, no surprises

Prepaid and fixed. No contract, and no roaming bill waiting for you when you get home.

Will it work on my phone?

Most phones sold since 2018 support eSIM — but not all of them. Models bought in mainland China, Hong Kong or Macao often have it removed, and carrier-locked phones will refuse an eSIM from anyone else. Check yours before you pay.

What people ask before buying

Will an eSIM work on my phone?

Dial *#06# on your phone. If a line labelled EID appears, your phone supports eSIM. Your phone must also be unlocked, meaning not tied to a single carrier. Phones bought on an overseas carrier contract are often locked and will refuse an eSIM from another provider.

Do I lose my own phone number?

No. A travel eSIM is a second line that carries data only. Your normal SIM stays in the phone and keeps your number for calls and SMS. To avoid roaming charges you simply turn off mobile data for your home SIM and leave it on for the eSIM.

When should I install it?

Before you fly, while you still have Wi-Fi. Installing needs an internet connection, and the airport on arrival is the worst place to discover a problem. Install at home, then switch it on when you land.

Can I install the same eSIM twice?

No. An eSIM profile can be downloaded to a device once. If you delete it, factory reset the phone, or try to move it to a new phone, it cannot be restored and it is not refundable. This is a limitation of the eSIM standard, not a policy choice.

When does the validity period start?

For most plans, validity starts when the eSIM first connects to a network in the destination — not when you buy it. Every plan page states which rule applies to that specific plan, because a few plans start counting at purchase.

Can I share the connection as a hotspot?

It depends on the plan. Some wholesale plans block tethering. Every plan page states clearly whether hotspot sharing is supported, so check that line before buying if you plan to share with a laptop or a travel companion.
